I almost didn’t post anything about the awards show because I couldn’t think of anything nice to say, but I found a few bright moments in there, so here it goes. Queen Latifah was a little more than I could handle with her continued role playing, but whatever. Even though BET has gotten a little better with their amount of technical difficulties, there were still several awkward moments, missed cues and poor writing for the presenters. I really like Usher’s song “There Goes My Baby” and was glad he switched up from the generic performance with his back up dancers that we see on every other show, but man listening to his vocals towards the end of the song was painful. The Alicia Keys medley was interesting…and so was her ensemble. I think she needed a little bit more material in the front of her dress, unless they intended for it to just barely cover her coochie. With every step, I was concerned they were going to have to get the graphics department to pull out on of those black strips to cover up her goodies. Then she brought out Kim Burrell to sing for all of twenty seconds. What a tease. Why even bother?
I’m sorry, but I really am not into this Diddy Dirty Money thing. What is the point of the two girls? For the little amount of lyrics they sing he could just hire some random background singer to lay those vocals on the track. Why make them a part of your group and pay for them to go everywhere you go if you’re not even going to utilize them? Then Diddy started with that Hello, Good Morning crap and I was tempted to change the channel, but I didn’t. Another thing I don’t get is this Nicki Minaj mess. Who actually thinks this girl is talented? I can’t believe people are falling for this crap. She was lip-syncing her rap. Who does that? It’s just talking. You can’t handle that live? Was she saving her voice because she was using up her energy dancing? I hope no one classifies what she was doing as dancing. T.I. looked cute. It was good to see him out and about. Does Eminem look sick to you? He does to me. Trey Songz is cute as a button but he sounded like a dying cat. Someone please put him out of his misery. Please don’t ever sing a Prince song if you can’t handle it. Why did they even let him sing “Purple Rain” during his performance when it was a part of the upcoming tribute? Poor planning. Speaking of the Prince tribute…what the hell happened? Did they run out of money when it came time to allocate funds to the budget? Give me a freakin' break! You don’t treat royalty like that! He’s a prince for God sakes! You know he doesn’t come out of Paisley Park that often, especially with his bad hip, and y’all drag him all the way out here for this crap? You can’t have Janelle Monet (who can’t sing live and has only one go to dance move…the James Brown one leg slide thing that she does over and over again) and Esmerelda Whatever her name is (the symphony orchestra reject with the mediocre voice) perform for the prince. Prince wasn’t impressed either. Though, try as he might to hide it, you could see it all over his face. Alicia Keys is the kind of artist you hire for this situation. Except, she almost gave Prince (and everyone else in the room) a heart attack when she crawled up on that piano. Thank the Lord for Patti LaBelle. She saved the day. Prince seemed to enjoy her too…especially catching her shoe after she kicked it off. It was upsetting that Prince didn’t perform like the honorees normally do. I know how particular he is about that so he probably shut them down as soon as they asked. It was good to see him at least. He’s so pretty it’s ridiculous. I’m sorry, did I miss something? Were Gary Coleman, Lena Horne and Teddy Pendergrass the only ones that died this year? What happened to everyone else? Was that another technical difficulty in the production department? Tyrese sounded good. Oh yippee. Someone found El DeBarge and brought him back home. I’ve been so concerned about him ever since they aired his family’s episode of ‘Unsung’. He looks good and sounds good. I’m excited he’s making a comeback.
So...Jermaine comes out to talk about his brother and I’m not totally paying attention because his hair is extremely distracting. He’s still using that shellac to plaster his hair to his scalp, but now he’s doing this interesting thing where he’s allowing the ends of his hair to lift up on the sides. It’s kind of hard to explain and it’s all very confusing, but I noticed the style change and thought it was worth mentioning. Anyhow, when I came out of the trance his hair had me in, I heard him introduce the “one tribute we never got a chance to see.” I’m racking my brain trying to think of who he could be talking about and when the performance began I was still confused. I thought it was Trey Songz and couldn’t figure out why this was a tribute we’d all been waiting for. Then I realized it was Chris Breezy. Wow! The dancing was amazing. He really was the best person for the job because he had the moves down perfectly. I am just so excited by this homage to MJ and by Chris’ amazing talent that I feel my heart opening up to him again. I think I’m ready to let him back in. Then “Man in the Mirror” happens. What the hell? Christopher, Christopher, Christopher. Somebody get this boy a box of tissues…and not the cheap tissues, he needs the extra absorbent triple ply tissues because there is snot flying everywhere. I mean, he can’t even talk or catch his breath for sobbing so hard. Good Lord! Is the thought of making a change and starting with the man in the mirror that emotional? Well, too bad. Suck it up! Have your breakthroughs at your therapy sessions on your own time. I want to hear the song, damnit! He better get to pop locking and stop all this foolishness! I was ready to forgive him but now he’s making me mad. What was that? How did you guys feel about it? Post your thoughts and take the poll on the right side of the screen. Click here to watch the performance in case you missed it.
