Music Videos: Have they gone too far?

I saw on the web that India Arie thinks the new Lady GaGa video featuring Beyonce goes too far. It's no secret sex sells and unfortunately artists that don't play that game don't always get the recognition they deserve. I've always thought India Arie doesn't get the credit she's due becuase of her look...and it's a shame this site used a picture of her looking worse than Harriet Tubman to drive the point home.

Don't get me wrong, I'm guilty of it too. I enjoy a little eye candy in a music video. However, she raises a good point...when does it go too far? Check it out for yourself. Telephone Video Dancing in a thong is a bit much. I see it as an act of desperation. GaGa needed to do something to stand out next to Beyonce and to distract the audience from the fact that the song really isn't that good. I did enjoy the dance break in the superwoman outfits, but the rest of it was a waste.

It's true that sex sells, and we definitely buy it, because a sex tape or a naked music video usually jumpstarts a career. It's been going on for years. Madonna and Janet did it. Even D'Angelo, who I believe is a musical genius and doesn't need to play these games because his music is just that good, didn't become a household name until his naked video. (BTW, someone please go find D'Angelo and check him into rehab asap. The industry needs him back. It's been way too long.)

I guess Erykah Badu needs to breathe new life into her career because I can't for the life of me fathom what would posess her to do this....

  1. What's the point? I just don't get it. If you have to work this hard -- I mean I just don't get it. It's too cryptic and I'm not sure a video that needs "crib notes" is that effective. Besides, isn't the song about being free and getting away? What's that got to do with freeing yourself of all your clothes (cover) and then getting shot. Badu is an acquired taste that I haven't figured out and frankly don't think it's worth the effort. I just don't get it.

  2. Thanks Sharon! Erykah Badu may be an acquired taste but she had one of the best concerts when she was at the top of her game. Her first cd was a breath of fresh air and you can just put Mama's Gun on and let the whole thing play. There's not many cds out there that allow you to avoid the skip button. Her latest work is disappointing.

  3. Sorry guys! I have to disagree with you all on this one. I loved the Video!!!

I thought it was thought provoking and when the words "GroupThink" spilled out of her and she did her spoken word piece everything just came together.

I think that Erykah is good at making people think and the video did just that.

The video said so much without being overly dramatic. One take, one camera=AMAZING...

BTW, I got a chance to see her last Saturday and words cannot describe how awesome she is live!!!

  4. By the way again, I agree with L.A.H. when you on Mama's Gun. I think that it is my fav CD of all time. That CD goes down in history for me. She didn't get her props on that one.

  5. Ninja...Erika is a great performer, you've got to experience her live, it really is amazing, but please enlighten me. What did stripping in her wrap cap and the words Group Think spilling out of her head mean? I would love to know what thoughts it provoked cuz it just left me thinkin "huh?"
