The Idols Go To Motown

Casey – “Heard It Through The Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye This was my least favorite performance of his, which is weird because I usually love everything he does and I thought the Motown genre would’ve suited him well, so I’m not sure what happened.

Thia – “Heat Wave” by Martha and the Vandellas I like her voice. It’s thick and heavy and she has a great tone. I know they wanted her to pick up the pace with her song choices, so I hope they’re happy now. I wasn’t really moved by this performance, but I don’t think she was bad. I prefer her standing still singing a ballad (exactly what the judges are telling her not to do). Did anybody notice the Barbie twins singing background for her? Where did they get them from? They must be new this year. Then there’s also a threesome…two girls and a guy. I wonder how they decide who gets what each week. Maybe they let the contestants choose.

Jacob – “Your All I Need To Get By” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell Man, he’s just as sweet as he can be, isn’t he? He kills me when he bats his eyelashes. Anyway, WOW! This is his best performance so far. All the way through was good. No mistakes. He definitely worked that song and didn’t over do it. I got the chills for the first time this season.

Southern Bell – “You Keep Me Hanging On” by The Supremes She had a really cute dress on. I know that has nothing to do with singing, but I just though I’d mention that. This was the perfect song choice for her. See what happens when you let a professional choose your song for you? I see she opted for the Barbie twins to back her up. I think she sang the song well, but I’m not jumping out of my seat.

Stefano – “Hello” by Lionel Ritchie Hmmm. I was excited when I heard he was singing this song, because every week he is amazing, but I have to say I was under whelmed. Not my favorite performance of his. He seemed to struggle with the pitch.

Haley – “You Really Got a Hold On Me” by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles Curly-haired girl got her hair straightened this week. I had high hopes for this girl from the auditions when she sang that song which escapes my memory right now, but I’ve given up hope for her. I think she’ll be going home soon.

Country Boy – “For Once In My Life” by Stevie Wonder Oh Lord. I really don’t want to hear this boy sing ever again.

Pia – “All In Love Is Fair” by Stevie Wonder OMG, I love this song. Wow! I loved her performance. I really think this girl can be the next big ballad, movie power song superstar. She’s got the look and she’s got the pipes. I can’t wait for her to come out with her CD. The industry needs her to fill that void. Whitney is in rehab and Celine is back in Vegas for a couple of years so we really could use some Pia.

Paul – “Tracks of My Tears” by Smokey Robinson I think it was smart to switch the song up and sing it in that style. I think it could’ve worked great if he sang it well, but he didn’t. I’m over him. Send him home.

Naima – “Dancing In The Street” by Martha and the Vandellas I’m not a fan of this song. I think her vocals were mediocre, but the African dancing and the drums were pretty cool.

James – “Living For The City” by Stevie Wonder I’m not a fan of this contestant, but I think this was a smart song choice for him and he did a good job with it.

If my psychic powers are working properly, Haley and Naima will be in the bottom and Haley will probably go home.

  1. Response - Part 1
OK, LAH. I’ll take your lead and respond in the same format:

Casey: “Heard It Through The Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye – I’m with you. This performance didn’t knock me off my feet. I guess it was OK, but for a genre that should have been a perfect fit, it was very disappointing. He’s a weird dude. It was almost like he picked the one song and arrangement that exposed the flaws in his voice that have not appeared in his other craftily arranged performances.

Thia: “Heat Wave” by Martha and the Vandellas – I LOVE THIS GIRL!!!!! She has such a strong and rich sound. It’s amazing how mature her instrument is at 16. I could listen to her all day. This rendition was good. But I agree, just stand still, sing a ballad and continue to blow me away. I think the judges are wrong in trying to urge her to reinvent the wheel. She’s got a style already and they need to let her do her thing. Obviously, the public agrees.

Jacob: “You’re All I Need To Get By” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell – DITTO, DITTO, DITTO!!!!! This child is an AMAZING performer with a genuine God given talent. He took his time and he worked that song! I was in tears. He is absolutely spell-binding. Every week I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to see what Jacob is going to do. I am so happy and proud for him. I can only imagine what a joy he is to his parents. It doesn’t even matter if he wins (although I hope he does) because in my opinion he’s destined to have a phenomenal career regardless.

Southern Bell: “You Keep Me Hanging On” by The Supremes – Lauren (aka “Southern Bell”) is cute as a button, but I thought her performance was just adequate. I guess that’s not a bad thing, but I wasn’t bowled over.

Stefano: “Hello” by Lionel Ritchie – I must admit, Stefano is one of my top favorites. Here is another person like Jacob and Thia who has a unique and rich instrument. As with Jacob and Thia, I see a successful career in his future. Sadly, his performance was not up to his usual standards. I don’t know if it was the unappealing arrangement that threw him off, but I was a little disappointed with this performance. “Hello” is such a melodically haunting song and Stefano’s arrangement was just awful. On top of that he was over singing the song which caused him to miss notes and brought out a harsh tone in his voice. I was really let down.

  2. RESPOSNE - PART 2
Haley: “You Really Got a Hold On Me” by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles – LAH, remember her very enjoyable yodeling of “Blue”? She’s a very capable singer, but I was not in love with this rendition. Seemed like she was too worried about getting down the steps in those high heels but she did look cute.

Country Boy – “For Once In My Life” by Stevie Wonder – Color me shocked! I really liked it. “Country Boy” aka Scotty is obviously going to sing nothing but country even its Motown, but I didn’t hate the country twist on this song. But as I give it more thought, it seems its more about Stevie Wonder than Scotty. The point I’m trying to make is Stevie Wonder’s songs can stand up to any style of music and still blow you away. Hm…maybe it was more about the songs re-arrangement than Scotty’s voice, too. LAH, maybe you would have loved it more if Carrie Underwood were singing it with that same country twist.

Pia: “All In Love Is Fair” by Stevie Wonder – I couldn’t agree with you more. This girl is superior! Like you said, she has the chops to stand tall with the power houses. As far as I’m concerned, this is another person who is destined for a great career no matter whether she wins AI or not.

Paul: “Tracks of My Tears” by Smokey Robinson – It’s almost like he talked the song and doesn’t actually “sing” it melodically. It’s really strange. Sadly, there just are not that many songs that fit his extremely weak voice. I’m a little disappointed that he took up a space for a real singer in the top 24 to begin with.
Naima: “Dancing In The Street” by Martha and the Vandellas – Naimi is a wild chick and I really like her. She doesn’t have the strongest vocals in the competition but she has style which makes her very entertaining. The drums, the outfits, and the dancing were all a lot of fun. And her singing was not bad, actually better than her last two performances. I’m glad we got a chance to see her in this competition but I fear she won’t be around too much longer.

James: “Living For The City” by Stevie Wonder – I have to admit this guy usually irritates me and I can’t wait for him to go home. I really don’t want to see him in the finals. The truth is his vocals are not that unique and the screeching screaming he usually relies on is really, really irritating. However, having said all that, he was uncharacteristically not bad for a change. I can only surmise that once again it’s the power of Stevie. I mean, you really can’t go wrong with a Stevie Wonder song.

I don’t think your psychic powers are too far off the mark. However, I think the bottom three is going to consist of Haley, Naimi and Paul. And, if my telepathic powers of persuasion are on point, Paul will be packing his bags tonight.

On another note, it just thrills me so much that Nigel Lythgoe is back with AI. Don’t know if I’m right or not, but I have a strong feeling that he is responsible for bringing some authenticity back to this show. I mean they truly have tried to provide us with superior talent this year and I couldn’t be happier. And that Steven Tyler is another smart move on the part of the producers. What a hoot! Here are two of my favorite quotes of his for the night: “Ripped that song another beauty mark;” and my personal favorite - “You don’t look a day over fabulous.”

  3. Ok, think its me but I loved Scotty's performance. I like the way he sings. He's going to be a great country star. Hands down.

Not really impressed with Casey this week. He kinda disappointed me.

Pia-I'm over the ballads right now. I would like to see her try something else. I'm not disagreeing with you guys though.

Jacob, he's amazing! His eye moment add so much to his performance (LOL, just joking!). I kinda even like the MAC lipgloss and shoulder movement! LMAO!

Paul, his spin was interesting. I guess you can make it sound good as long as you sing it the only way you know how.

  4. LAH, what in the world is happening to the universe. I can't believe that both are psychic powers failed us so miserably. I mean, REALLY! What the heck was that? Well, they've got their top 11 and I'm happy for the contestants. But do you really want to pay money to see Paul warble and fidget through his performances? And then there's the screamer. Oh Well. Hope you enjoyed your Stevie Wonder surprise, LAH. Unfortunately, it was more about AI than Stevie. I really like Sugarland. Really cute song. Jennifer's song is GREAT! And so was the performance. Dang if R. Kelly hasn't done it again. WOW!

  5. @ Sharon - I agree with pretty much all of your comments. Stefano was disappointing because he really had the potential to sing the mess out of Hello. He shouldn't have changed the arrangement. Some things are great just the way they are. Did you really shed a tear while listening to Jacob? Funny. He was really good though. Ok, let me say this about Scotty to you and Joy...his performance this week was actually pretty good, but outside of this performance it always sounds like he's singing the same song and I'm just over him. I'm extremely upset that Paul has taken up a space on the tour that could've been Karen's. She could've sang her Spanglish songs all across America. James (Living for the City) was pretty good, I admit, I'm just not a fan of his. You don't look a day over fabulous was funny. And I do think the show has definitely been stepping it up this season. I was so excited when Stevie Wonder came out. I almost fell over. I couldn't contain myself. And I thought the Hulk Hogan surprise was really cute too. I totally disagree with you regarding J-Hud. I hate that song and I thought she sounded bad singing it, when she ususally sounds really good so I don't know what happened, but maybe she was overdoing it to prove a point because she was back at Idol. Don't even get me started on how grammatically incorrect it is.

  6. @ Joy - LOL! You like the eyes and the make up and the shoulder moves? Funny. Pia can keep singing ballads and she'll be just fine. If she wanted to sing and upbeat song I'm sure she'll be fine, but I hope they don't pressure her into dancing across the stage and then have her looking awkward and crazy.
