After years of debate, I am ready to admit defeat. Daddy, you are right. Jennifer Holiday’s rendition of “And I’m Telling You” is way better than Jennifer Hudson’s. Though I think out of all the people out there in a position to make an attempt at even coming close to taking on the role of Effie White on the big screen, Jennifer Hudson did a great job. Of course Jennifer Holiday did the best version ever. It doesn’t get any better than that. Really what I was trying to debate more was to acknowledge the great job that J-Hud did with such an impossible task, which my father refuses to notice. When the movie first came out there was a lot of discussion over which version was the best, but I really don’t think it’s fair to compare the two. I am not getting in the middle of this again. Personally, I still don’t think it’s fair to compare the two. Jennifer H-1 was the bomb back in her day and now Jennifer H-2 is fantastic as the new kid on the block. I mean really, can you imagine trying to follow someone as good as Jennifer Holiday was in that role? Besides, I take it all in – lack of experience, age, new to acting and I say Hudson was phenomenal. She deserves all the recognition she received for her first time effort. It’s a shame Jennifer Holiday didn’t get that same opportunity back in the day. It would have been cool to have a Movie DVD with the original cast. If you couldn’t get to the stage performance, all you had was the CD. It was good but it still can never capture the onstage experience.
ReplyDeleteJust got through watching JH-1 and I almost cried. How in the world someone could perform like that and sustain it for every show night after night is unimaginable. I remember seeing her in on stage in this performance three times and believe me it never got old. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.
Now after watching the both of them together, I’m speechless. I think there should be a 3rd choice for the voting – “like them both and will never choose between them.” So, you’re Father is sticking to his guns and I will vote for him but for me, I’m staying neutral.
LOL! Of course he's sticking to his guns, cuz he's right. If we're going to compare the two, and I'm really not sure we should because I don't think its fair, then the clear winner is Holiday. Though you don't want to vote and claim you are neutral, I'm putting you down for Holiday too cuz the fact that you just almost cried and you went to see her 3x and loved it ach time answers my question. You didn't do all that with Hudson.
